The new specification will make it easier for broadcasters to insert subtitles for minority audiences.
The European Broadcast Union (EBU) has published a new specification for subtitling, and is inviting comments from users and developers.
The new specification, which is known as EBU Timed Text (EBU-TT), is designed to make it easier to interchange and archive file-based HD content with subtitles, using the XML format.
The specification is based on the W3C Timed Text Markup Language specification adjusted for the specific requirements of broadcasters. The EBU says that the specification will be increasingly relevant as broadcasters move to file-based HD facilities, where subtitles are created, edited, exchanged and archived together with the content.
The system is likely to gain widespread acceptance given the number of different languages at both the national and regional level in Europe. With the new specification in place broadcasters will be able to insert subtitles for minority audiences.
