Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4 at the Apple developer’s conference on Monday with many commentators under whelmed by the device.
The main improvements are a higher resolution screen, the includion of the A4 processor (the same that powers the iPad) and front-facing cameras to enable video calling.
The service will only be available using WiFi and is iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only.
The US $199 smartphone will undergo the fastest international roll-out of any iPhone as the company looks to grow its market share outside of the US. The new handset will be available in 88 countries by September.
“This is beyond a doubt the most precise thing and one of the most beautiful things that we’ve ever made,” said Apple CEO Jobs.
The success of the iPad has stolen some of the thunder from this iPhone launch. A prototype of the device was also famously acquired by technology blog Gizmodo, taking much of the element of surprise out of the iPhone 4 unveiling.
Jobs also revealed that the company’s advertising platform iAd had $60 million of sales commitment this year. The service is an attempt by Apple to control the advertising revenue generated around applications.
