CE giants Panasonic and LG Electronics have signed a deal with VoIP technology developer Skype to integrate the latter’s video calling application in a new range of digital televisions.
Skype technology will be included as standard in Panasonic Viera-Cast televisions and around 25 new televisions set for release by LG in 2010, which are designed to connect to the internet.
Both Panansonic and LG have confirmed they will also market high-def webcams separately for use with the televisions.
The Skype software app will enable users to make and receive free video calls using their television sets as well as accessing videoconferencing services.
Skype remains officially banned in many Gulf countries, including the UAE.
