The ten most-downloaded movies of 2009 have been announced with Star Trek receiving the dubious honour of the top spot.

According to torrentfreak.com, the movie was downloaded 10,960,000 times, narrowly beating Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which notched-up 10,600,000 downloads.

Both of these films were successful at the box office however racking up global receipts of US $385m and $835m respectively. However, the third film on the list – RocknRolla – took a relatively modest total of $25.7m at the box office. Torrentfreak.com attributes its popularity with downloaders to the fact that it was posted by ‘aXXo’, a highly active uploader with a reputation for producing high-quality copies.

Two of this year’s top five box office movies – 2012 and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – were absent from the list of top downloads.
