A free-to-air (FTA) satellite channel broadcasting a montage of still photographs seemingly in tribute to Saddam Hussein has gone on air over the Eid al-Adha holidays, according to an AP report.
The channel emerged on the Islamic calendar’s third anniversary of the execution of the former Iraqi dictator.
Al-Lafeta (The Banner), as the channel is formally known, is broadcast throughout the MENA region by both Nilesat and Noorsat.
AP traced the ownership of the channel to a Syrian national in Damascus called Mohammed Jarboua, who told the news agency that the channel is for Iraqis and other Arabs who “long for his rule”.
There are mixed reports on the location of the channel with former supporters placing it in Jordan, Syria and Libya.
A recent report by the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research claimed that the Arab world’s 500-plus FTA channels cost US $6 billion a year to run and generate just $700m in advertising revenue.
Noorsat were unavailable for comment due to the Eid al-Adha holidays.
