Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the biggest entertainment release of all time taking US $550 million in its first five days of release, according to publisher Activision Blizzard.
The previous record, also set by a computer game, Grand Theft Auto IV, was $500 million in five days.
The record for the highest five-day opening box office receipts is held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which took $394 million.
The game has also broken records for online multiplayer hours racking up an 5.2 million hours of gameplay on the Xbox LIVE platform on the first day alone.
“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. “The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media.”
