Fifty-seven percent of mobile users in the UAE would consider switching their operator if they were allowed, according to the results of a new survey published this week.

The YouGov Siraj lifestyle poll, which polled 984 UAE residents last month, also revealed that 68 percent of respondents said that Etisalat was their sole mobile service provider, as opposed to just six percent who chose du.

The remaining 26 percent said they used both. When asked to indicate which they consider to be their main service provider (the service provider whose services they use most of the time), Etisalat's figure bumped up 11 points to 79 percent, the survey said.

When respondents were asked if in the future they would consider switching from their current mobile phone service provider 57 percent indicated they would probably or definitely do so.

In fact, 22 percent indicated that they would “definitely” consider the change.

Amir Bozorgzadeh, business development associate at YouGov Siraj, said: “This is certainly a clear signal that albeit assumptions that Etisalat maintains a strong, monopoly-like, position in the market, there is apt room for du to aggressively take market share should its marketing mix continue to exploit the current gap in consumer loyalty.”

added: “Etisalat, for its part, will have to stand steady on its toes and summon up innovative approaches to bolster its current position at the top of the hill”.

Mobile phone customers in the UAE are expected to be given the ability to migrate between Etisalat and du networks soon.

Last month, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said it was set to launch mobile phone number portability in the UAE in November.

The move will allow customers to migrate to any network operator using their existing number and will help boost competition between the country's two operators, bringing price and service benefits to consumers, the TRA said.

Also speaking last month, du CEO Osman Sultan said internet customers in the UAE should be able to choose their provider in 2010.

He described opening up competition on fixed internet access as “the next big thing” but was reluctant to put an exact date on when it might happen.

Both operators told DPME.com last month, that they planned to lower broadband prices in 2010.

Disappointing and expensive service
Coming from a country where Mobile phone operators have cutthroat competition makes me laugh at these 2 operators here. I totally agree to comments above that most of the people will give a try to any new operator including myself. Etisalat supposedly the most reliable operator here has a crappy customer support. I have waited for 40 mins and eventually hung up when i call 101. And this has happened multiple times. I wish the govt. here would consider bringing an other better operator to boost the competition in favor of people.

I totally agree with you. Orange would simply crush Etisalat and Du if there was no monopoly.

I think David is not fair to Etisalat or at least he doesn't know about them. Etisalat is one of the largest and most successful telecom operators in the world. They have operations in more than 15 countries in the world and they are bidding for a couple of projects in Europe and Latin America as well. DU, I agree offers bad services so it is unfair to put both in the same basket.

Eti-sal-at
Eti = It sal = doesn't at = work Both dU and Etisalat would be dead in the water outside of their UAE dUopoly. If Vodafone and Orange came here they would both die quickly. Want an example, dial 101 and set a timer and see how long it takes to get to a customer service agent.

Both operators are a joke
If there was a third company offering services in the country, I would definitely give it a try. I'm an IT manager and dealing with Etisalat as well as DU is nothing like a piece of cake. There is no communication between the different teams, making support a pain in the ass. One employee even has a number which is also used by somebody else. Yep, there can be two people with the same number... That made me laugh at the beginning, now that I have to complain every day with them, it's getting really really hard...
