Global IPTV subscribers approach 24 million mark

The number of IPTV subscribers worldwide is close to the 24 million barrier, according to research released at the CommunicAsia summit in Singapore.

While Western Europe and North America have 11.4 million and 4.4 million subscribers respectively, the study estimates that there were only 10,000 IPTV subscribers in the Middle East in Q1 2009.

The research found healthy quarterly growth in IPTV subscriber levels in most markets. Eastern Europe leads the way with a 21.3 percent growth rate closely followed by 15.8 percent in North America.

The Broadband Forum notes that these growth levels are particularly impressive give the current financial climate.

“This report shows that despite the economic situation the world is facing, the demand for both broadband and IPTV continues at pace as people look to improve the quality and speed of their communications,” said George Dobrowski, chairman and president of the Broadband Forum.
