GCC iPhone 3GS sales to commence 'in August'

Apple's new iPhone 3GS range can now record video and send it straight to the web.

Official sales of Apple’s new iPhone 3GS smartphone will commence in the GCC in mid-August, while grey imports are expected to precede the official release by a number of weeks, according to sources.

The handset will once again be distributed under exclusive deals with country-based telco providers, including Etisalat in the UAE and Mobily in Saudi Arabia.

The latest version of Apple’s iconic smartphone features longer battery life, a 3 megapixel camera, a digital video recorder, and hands free voice control.

The company claims the new handset is twice as fast as the outgoing iPhone 3G, a basic 8GB version of which Apple plans to sell in international markets for $US99.

It remains unlikely that GCC telecommunications partners will entertain this scenario locally, given the revenues generated to date by contracted consumer data rate packages tied to handset sales.
